Prerequisite Skills for Registration
Who Should Register?
To ensure your child is ready for our program, please review the following prerequisite skills. Your child is well-suited for registration if they can:
– Request Items: They should be able to ask for at least five different items using single words, pictures, or sign language.
– Communication Clarity: They need to be understood by someone who is meeting them for the first time.
– Name Response: They should respond when their name is called.
– Word Repetition: They must be able to repeat single words at least 80% of the time when prompted.
– Following Instructions: They should be able to follow simple instructions such as “Sit down,” “Come here,” or “Stop.”
– Group Participation: They need to be able to participate in a group lesson for at least five minutes without becoming overly distracted.
If your child meets these criteria, they are ready to benefit from our program.
Determining If Your Child is Not a Suitable Candidate
Your child may not meet the necessary skill requirements if they exhibit any of the following:
– Your child does not use single words, pictures, or sign language to communicate their needs and thoughts.
– Your child is not able to engage in fluent, back-and-forth conversations.
– They do not speak in full sentences.
– They can not independently ask “wh-” questions (such as who, what, where, when, and why).
– Your child has behaviours that are dangerous to themselves, teachers, or peers. These behaviours might result in physical harm such as cuts and bruises, necessitate emergency calls, or require hospital visits.
– For behaviours that significantly hinder group participation, it is recommended to consider one-on-one Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions.
– For new or escalating high-risk behaviours, it may be appropriate to seek Urgent Response Services.
